I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take this anymore!
For business geeks and media nerds, you will love the movie Network.
It’s the story of Union Broadcasting Systems (UBS) media company response to sagging ratings. The company sacks anchorman Howard Beale because his share dropped from a “28 to a 12.” After Beale’s termination he goes on air to declare he is going to “blow his brains out” live on television because of his anxiety over losing his job.
When the ratings sky rocket after Beale’s crazy comments, UBS falls into a tailspin of hilarity after they put Beale back on air and give him his own show.
The satire is exquisite, and every businessperson out there will watch this movie and see elements of themselves and their coworkers in Howard Beale the aging wash out, Diana Christensen the work-obsessed, hard driving corporate climber, Max Schumacher the old guard group leader helplessly unaware of the change around him, and Frank Hackett the C-suite executive who demands profit growth and board recognition no matter the cost or ethical concerns.
